Wildlife conservation scientists have developed a method of using spatial planning software to increase the effectiveness of security patrols in the greater Virungas landscape – the home of the mountain gorillas. Their initial analysis showed that only 22% of the area was being effectively patrolled. With scarce resources for enforcement of wildlife laws, this novel approach could have significant impact on Africa the conservation of wildlife species throughout the world.
